Ask for design pressure, not a wind-speed label

Why a garage door is specified by tested positive and negative design pressures, who sets the requirement, and where impact rating fits outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone.

What is not established

Pressure is the rating

DASMA's wind-load FAQ states that garage doors are tested to pressures rather than wind speeds, and that both positive and negative pressures are required. A door described only by a wind speed does not tell you which pressures it was tested to.

The building department sets the requirement

The same FAQ names the local building department as the sole and final determiner of garage door wind-load requirements. DASMA's Florida wind-load guide references ANSI/DASMA 108 as the test procedure and places residential homes in Risk Category II, but it is based on the 2020 Florida Building Code rather than the 2023 edition now in force. Treat it as background, not as the requirement for your address.

Where impact rating fits

Impact rating is a separate evaluation under cyclic and impact procedures such as ANSI/DASMA 115. A Florida Building Commission staff document reproducing residential code section R301.2.1.2 applies wind-borne debris protection to garage door glazing in wind-borne debris regions, which are defined by distance from the mean high-water line, exposure and design wind speed. Whether a parcel is in such a region is a building-department determination.

Miami-Dade County's product control brochure states that every Florida county other than Miami-Dade and Broward is outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, and that a Notice of Acceptance is an HVHZ approval that may be used elsewhere only where the local authority allows it.

Original paraphrase of DASMA, Florida Building Commission staff and Miami-Dade County documents. The staff document is a code-development comment, not the adopted 2023 code text, which could not be retrieved.
