Keep opener and spring safety in the replacement plan
The federal reversal requirement, the consumer checks CPSC and DASMA describe, and why springs and cables are technician work.
What is not established
- Whether a specific installed opener complies with the current standard is not established.
- Later amendments to 16 CFR Part 1211 were not retrieved from an official page.
- This guide is not an inspection or a repair instruction.
What the federal standard requires
CPSC's hazard sheet says reversing systems are required on all openers made or imported for US sale after January 1, 1991, with an external entrapment-protection requirement added in 1993. The 2018 direct final rule conformed 16 CFR Part 1211 to the seventh edition of UL 325 and summarizes built-in reversal within two seconds, a connection for an external sensing device, a 30-second reopen clock and a manual release.
Checks to keep doing
- Test reversal with a flat 2x4 under the door, as CPSC and DASMA describe, and inspect the door and opener about every 30 days.
- Photoelectric sensors are mounted no higher than six inches above the floor; edge sensors are an allowed alternative that the opener must monitor each cycle.
- Keep wall buttons and remotes away from children.
Leave springs and cables to a technician
DASMA's safety tips say springs and lift cables are under high tension and should be serviced only by a trained technician, that doors with extension springs need a safety cable through each spring, and recommend monthly safety checks, an annual technician visit and professional installation.
