Wind, impact and warranty figures on a roofing page, read carefully
What UL 2218, ASTM D3161 and D7158, FM 4473 and a stated mph wind warranty each mean, and what the manufacturers attach as conditions.
What is not established
- Not an engineering opinion, a performance prediction or a statement about how any roof will behave in a storm.
- Every figure here is the manufacturer's own statement on its own page; none was tested or verified for this draft.
- A warranty figure is a contract term with conditions, not a wind rating, and several pages tie their highest figure to the brand's own accessories or a certified installer.
- A test classification is not a Florida Product Approval or a Notice of Acceptance, and no number here was looked up in an issuing body's directory.
A warranty figure is not a wind rating
The mph figures on shingle pages are mostly warranty terms, and the top figure usually depends on the rest of the roof being the same brand or on a particular installation. CertainTeed states a 15-year 110 mph wind-resistance warranty on Landmark PRO with an upgrade to 160 mph that the page says requires CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge. TAMKO states wind protection up to 160 mph on Titan XT, with its WindGuard 160 mph extended warranty requiring TAMKO starter and hip and ridge, and separately states that the limited warranty does not cover hurricanes. Atlas states up to 160 mph when Pinnacle Impact is installed as an Atlas Signature Select roofing system. IKO states a 110 mph limited wind warranty with a 130 mph upgrade requiring high wind application. Malarkey states 110 mph standard and 130 mph enhanced, the enhanced figure requiring a Malarkey Certified Contractor and the full system. In this market, where design wind speeds and a hurricane exclusion are both live concerns, the condition is the material part.
Impact classes
UL 2218 classifies impact resistance by a steel-ball test, and the pages state their class plainly: Class 3 for CertainTeed Landmark PRO, Class 3 for IKO Cambridge, Class 3 for TAMKO Titan XT, and Class 4 for Atlas Pinnacle Impact and Malarkey Vista AR. Two manufacturers add their own caution. IKO states that its FM 4473 and UL 2218 Class 3 result is not a guarantee against hail, and TAMKO states that the steel-ball test may not correlate with rooftop experience. On the tile side the equivalent reference is FM 4473: Crown states Class 3 for Iberia, Windsor and Tuscany and Class 4 for Mediterranean, and Eagle states FM 4473 hail impact certification for three of its plants.
Shingle wind classifications
Two ASTM classifications appear on the shingle pages that publish them. IKO states ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for Cambridge, and Malarkey states the same two classifications for Vista AR. These are test classifications rather than warranty terms, which is why they sit beside, and sometimes above, a lower warranty mph figure on the same page.
Fire and algae
CertainTeed states a UL Class A fire rating for Landmark PRO. Algae coverage is warranted separately and narrowly: CertainTeed states a 30-year StreakFighter algae-resistance warranty, IKO a 10-year algae resistance warranty, Atlas 3M Scotchgard Protector algae resistance, and Malarkey a 25-year algae warranty stated as limited to blue-green algae. A separate algae term is not part of the wind or impact figure.
Where an approval differs from a rating
A rating classifies a product against a test. A Florida Product Approval or a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance authorizes an assembly for use under the code, and s. 553.842 requires that approval before use. The two are often printed side by side and are not interchangeable: Malarkey prints an FBC approval number next to its ASTM classes, while CertainTeed states classes and no approval. A quote that cites a rating has not thereby cited an approval.
