Read ENERGY STAR and NFRC information for a door
How ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 defines a door, why the glazing level matters, and what the NFRC door label shows.
What is not established
- Which ENERGY STAR climate zone Sarasota County falls in is not stated in the specification as recorded.
- No specific door's certification or rating is established.
- Energy labels say nothing about impact protection or permits.
How ENERGY STAR defines a door
The Version 7.0 specification defines a door as a sliding or swinging entry system between conditioned and unconditioned space, including sidelites, in three glazing categories: opaque, half-lite or less, and more than half-lite. Criteria depend on glazing level and climate zone, and products made on or after October 23, 2023 must meet Version 7.0 to carry the label.
What the NFRC door label shows
NFRC door labels carry two ratings, U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient, with the circled value applying to the door's glass configuration. NFRC is the certification body for ENERGY STAR doors.
Manufacturer statements differ
- ProVia's Signet and Legacy pages say ENERGY STAR applies to most styles, and Masonite's Performance Door System page says many of its front and patio doors are certified.
- Simpson Door Company's FAQ, as recorded in the research, states its doors are not ENERGY STAR rated, while many carry U-factor and SHGC ratings on its approvals page.
- None of these statements establishes the rating of a specific quoted door.
Original paraphrase of the ENERGY STAR specification, the NFRC label page and manufacturer statements recorded in the channel research. No savings, incentive or certification claim is made.
